80+ Amazing Things to Do in the Hudson Valley: A Local Chef's Insider Guide

The Hudson Valley isn't just a place we visit. It's our home.

My wife Jamie and I have spent our entire lives here. We grew up in the Hudson Valley, raised our children here, and now have the incredible pleasure of watching our grandchildren grow up here, too.

We've watched this region change over the decades. Old resorts have closed, new businesses have opened, farms have reinvented themselves, and the Hudson Valley has become one of the most exciting destinations in the Northeast for food, wine, outdoor adventures, and unique experiences.

But some of the best things about this area haven't changed at all.

The mountains. The waterfalls. The farms. The people. And that feeling you get when you discover a special place that you can't believe more people don't know about.

Jamie and I both worked at the legendary Nevele resort when we were young. Those early experiences helped shape our passion for hospitality. My career eventually took me to places like The Greenbrier, The Broadmoor, and the three-Michelin-starred La Tante Claire in London.

But the Hudson Valley always remained home.

On December 31, 2003, we opened Aroma Thyme Bistro in Ellenville. More than two decades later, we're still here, supporting local farmers, discovering great wines, exploring the mountains, and sharing our favorite places with visitors.

We love skiing, hiking, biking, discovering wineries, enjoying great restaurants, and finding little hidden gems. And now we're doing many of those same things with our grandchildren.

That's why we created Upstate Experience.

We want to help you discover the Hudson Valley the way we know it—not just the famous attractions, but the places locals love.

This guide focuses primarily on Ellenville, the Shawangunk Mountains, the Catskills, and the surrounding Hudson Valley, with a few worthwhile day trips farther away.

Whether you're visiting for a romantic weekend, a family vacation, a wine country getaway, or an outdoor adventure, there's something here for you.

Gertrude's Nose — Minnewaska State Park

One of my favorite hikes in the Hudson Valley. Gertrude's Nose rewards you with spectacular cliffs, rock formations, and sweeping views across the Shawangunk Ridge. This is a more demanding hike, but absolutely worth it for experienced hikers. Bring water, good hiking shoes, and your camera.

Sam's Point and the Shawangunk Ridge near Ellenville

Sam's Point Preserve — Cragsmoor

Sam's Point offers some of the most spectacular views in the Shawangunks. Between the unusual dwarf pine barrens, rocky cliffs, ice caves, and nearby waterfalls, it's one of the region's truly special landscapes. It's also practically in our backyard in Ellenville.

Verkeerder Kill Falls — Sam's Point

Verkeerder Kill Falls plunges 187 feet along the Shawangunk Ridge and makes a memorable hiking destination. I enjoy reaching it from Sam's Point, although the trek requires time and preparation. The views are especially impressive when water is flowing strongly. Stay on marked trails and respect protected areas.

Cox Road Ridge Trail — Cragsmoor Area

One of my favorite local loops is the roughly three-mile ridge hike accessed around Cox Road. It's a wonderful way to enjoy the Shawangunk landscape without committing to an all-day adventure. Check current access and trail maps before visiting, since some nearby land is privately owned.

Illustrative waterfall cascading in a rocky landscape, not necessarily Stony Kill Falls

Stony Kill Falls — Wawarsing

Stony Kill Falls is another beautiful waterfall close to Ellenville. It's especially impressive after periods of rain. The surrounding forest and rock formations make it a memorable destination. Illustrative wooded stream and river scenery, not a photograph of Split Rock

Split Rock — Mohonk Preserve

Illustrative small wooded waterfall and stream, not a photograph of Esopus Creek

Esopus Creek — Catskills

Esopus Creek is a defining waterway of the Catskills. Visitors enjoy its scenery, fishing, and water-related recreation where permitted. Conditions vary considerably by location, and water releases can create dangerous currents. Choose established recreation access points rather than unmarked swimming areas.

Illustrative Catskills river and autumn woods, not Lake Minnewaska or Lake Awosting

Lake Minnewaska & Lake Awosting

Lake Minnewaska and Lake Awosting are beautiful sky lakes surrounded by carriage roads and hiking trails. During designated summer periods, supervised beach areas offer swimming opportunities. Check New York State Parks for current access and swimming rules, then plan a day combining the water and surrounding mountain scenery.

Illustrative mossy cliff waterfall, not necessarily Horseshoe Mine Falls

Horseshoe Mine Falls — Wurtsboro Area

This is one of the lesser-known local waterfall stops worth exploring. Its connection to the area's mining history makes it especially interesting. Because access routes can be poorly marked and may cross private land, confirm a legal public route before attempting to visit.

They're a good choice for younger riders and families exploring at their own pace.

Wineries, Vineyards & Wine Country Experiences

Wine is a huge part of our lives.

Through our restaurant and VIP Winery Vacations, Jamie and I have visited more than 400 wineries across six countries.

And there's excellent wine country right here in our own backyard.

After spending our lives in the Hudson Valley, Jamie and I still discover new things to love about this region.

That's what makes it so special.

You can spend one day hiking in the Shawangunk Mountains, another exploring wineries and distilleries, and the next enjoying a farm, museum, or live theater performance.

You can bring your children to the same farms you visited when you were young. You can discover a hidden waterfall, enjoy a locally produced glass of wine, or spend an evening around a fire with someone you love.

And you don't have to figure it all out yourself.

That's why we created Upstate Experience.

We want to share the places we love, introduce visitors to the people we know, and help create memorable experiences throughout the Hudson Valley.

Whether you're staying at one of our vacation rentals, another Airbnb, a hotel, or visiting friends, we'd love to help you discover something special.

From private winery tours and exclusive winemaker tastings to chef-prepared dinners, tequila experiences, transportation, and personalized hospitality, we're bringing together the best of what this region has to offer.

Come experience the Hudson Valley with us.
